The Winter War
When the war broke out on 30 November 1939, hostilities also began in Kuhmo at 9:45 am when a Red Army unit attacked across the border in nearby Laamasenvaara, where the war claimed its first victims.
This website presents the course of the Winter War and its most significant battles on the Kuhmo front line. The Winter War tour presents the key battle sites of the war, reconstructed field fortifications and other sites connected to the theme.
On the website you can plan an independent Winter War tour guided by an app, which you can download onto your own device. More in-depth information is easily available through links. You can also order a personal guide as an outsourced service.
There are also remnants of war-time structures and other signs of the war elsewhere in the terrain, but they are not mentioned in this guide due to their lesser importance with regard to battles or their inaccessibility, bad condition or for safety reasons.
