Liberation Route Europe

An international network preserves the memory of events from World War II.

Kuhmo joined the Liberation Route Europe (LRE) network in autumn 2025, which connects sites and routes related to World War II history across Europe. The goal of the LRE network is to share stories about the events of the war, the significance of liberation, and the value of peace with an international audience. Through this network, Kuhmo gains visibility as part of a broader European cultural heritage and tourism landscape.

Liberation Route Europe is officially recognized as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe, highlighting its role as an important part of shared European history and identity. With this cultural route status, Kuhmo joins a distinguished group of sites that promote historical understanding, intercultural dialogue, and sustainable tourism.

Membership in the LRE network gives Kuhmo the opportunity to present its own war history in an international context, increase regional awareness, and attract travelers who value cultural heritage and the relevance of history today. The network also offers opportunities to participate in joint events and projects, share knowledge, and connect with international partners.
