Digital exhibition of unknown events from World War II
The Untold Arctic Wars is Finland’s first international historical documentary series, widely sold worldwide and awarded international prizes. The series explores the least-known events of World War II in the Arctic region. Now, the series has been transformed into a digital exhibition in Kuhmo, offering unprecedented visual material for history enthusiasts.
For the TV series, more than 100 animated 3D maps of World War II events were created, and over 600 black-and-white photographs were colorized and converted into three-dimensional images. The series’ visual design has received international acclaim, winning, among others, the main award for Best Historical Documentary at the World Media Festival in Hamburg. A chain of digital exhibitions is being prepared across the Nordic region, with each exhibition focusing on its own theme and time period.
The exhibition consists of content displayed on eight touchscreens, which visitors can explore at their own pace. In addition, a short film is shown, focusing on the first moments of World War II in the Arctic.
The exhibition opened on July 8, 2022.
It is located at the Kalevalan Taidepaja (Väinämöinen 7), near the Winter War Museum (Väinämöinen 11). Admission to the digital exhibition is free. To enter, you need a door code, which can be obtained from the reception of Hotel Kalevala nearby or from the Winter War Museum (mon–fri, 9 a.m.– 3 p.m.).
